Organizer FAQS: Collecting Contributions
This web site (“Site”) is owned and operated by VolunteerSpot, Inc., dba, Signup.com.
How do I collect Contributions?
We've partnered with trusted online payment transaction companies Stripe and PayPal to make it easy to collect money (contributions, payments and donations). Your supporters can make contributions with either their credit cards, their bank accounts, or their PayPal or Venmo accounts. You'll receive the money directly into your Stripe or PayPal account and can then transfer it to your designated bank account.
When you want to collect money on a SignUp, you will choose a payments partner (Stripe or PayPal) specific to this SignUp. In the set up screen, you will be prompted to create an account with the payments partner of your choice and to link it to your (organization’s) bank account. You'll automatically be directed right back to Signup.com when you're done. If you already have an account on Stripe or PayPal, great. You'll be able to enter your password to confirm that you're allowing money collected from your Signup to be placed into your account.
If I'm based outside of the U.S. or Canada, can I collect money on my SignUp (or make contributions)?
Unfortunately, not at this time. In the future we may be able to offer international users of SignUp.com the ability to collect money and make contributions.
How much does it cost to collect money on Signup.com?
You can use Signup.com for free; there are no set-up charges or monthly fees. Both Stripe and PayPal charge a fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Both partners offer a discounted fee for US 501(c)(3) nonprofits (2.2% + $0/30 per transaction) when you set up your account directly at Stripe or PayPal. All fees are automatically deducted from each transaction so you're never billed for anything.
Will I be notified when someone makes a contribution to my activity?
Yes! Your selected payments partner will send you emails to notify you of contributions.
How do I get collected funds out of Stripe or PayPal?
Withdrawing money is completely free! All you have to do is choose the withdrawal method that's right for you and authorize your bank account when you set up your account.
How do I get information about my supporters, contributors and donors?
Log in to your Stripe or PayPal account to access information such as contributor's name, email, address and phone number. You can also run a summary Contribution Report in the Reports tab of your SignUp’s Organizer view.
Will the supporter / contributor / donor receive a receipt?
Yes.To reduce your workload, both Stripe and PayPal will automatically generate receipts to all contributors.
What if we're a 501 (c)(3) organization?
If you operate a 501(c)(3) organization you may use Stripe or PayPal to accept contributions, donations and payments, but you acknowledge that not all payments made to your organization will be eligible for classification as "tax deductible to the extent allowed by law" and you assume full responsibility for the classification of your transactions. You acknowledge that you may have reporting and receipt requirements for these transactions. Signup.com, Stripe and PayPal specifically disclaim any liability in this regard.
What about Taxes?
You are responsible for the payment of any applicable Federal, State or Local Taxes ("Taxes") arising from your use of Stripe or PayPal payments services. We are not obligated to, nor will we determine whether Taxes apply, or calculate, collect, report or remit any Taxes to any tax authority arising from any transaction. In addition, you are responsible for compliance with any applicable Federal, State or Local Tax laws.
