Our Lady of Salem Shelter for Women
St. Timothy's Women's Overflow will open nightly this season, serving the most vulnerable among us. While we have a new name — Our Lady of Salem Women's Shelter — and a new partner — The Dwelling — the volunteer set-up remains the same as it has been for the past 12 years. Thank you for volunteering to help our guests and providing them with radical hospitality. If you have any questions about volunteering at St. Timothy's, please contact Kristen Machado at: kpmachado@ourladyofsalem.org. Bring To-Go Bags for 30 Between 6:15 pm and 8:00 pm Provide meal replacement “To Go” bags for guests to take with them as they leave in the morning. Suggestions: dry sandwiches with meat and cheese, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt cups, soft fruits, chewy granola bars, cheese crackers, applesauce or fruit cups, bottle of water. Please note: Bags should be delivered the day they are signed up for to be given out the following morning. For example: If you sign up for December 1, please bring the bags the night of December 1 to be given out on December 2. Bring and Serve Dinner for 30
Bring and Serve Dinner for 30 at 6:30 pm Dinner Volunteers provide our guests a hot meal in an atmosphere of hospitality. Dinner volunteers bring an entree and side dish/es (dessert is optional, but very much appreciated), and drinks. Please come with anything needed for serving including plates, silverware, napkins, cups, etc. Dinner volunteers will serve/plate the meal for our guests, and will help to clean up after dinner. You should bring the meal ready to serve at 6:30 pm. This task is more fun and affordable when a team works together, however only one contact person is needed to sign up for the whole group. This will be the person who also receives the reminder e-mail, which may include meal guidelines/suggestions. Minimum number of volunteers is two and the maximum is five. (Having a large group that may outnumber our guests is uncomfortable for those we serve, so please abide by this rule).Protein is critical for our guests’ diet, so please make sure that any meatless entree contains an alternate form of protein. Firm fruits or vegetables may be hard on teeth that receive little or no dental care. Many guests avoid eating pork.Minimum age for volunteering is 16 accompanied by an adult. Meal preparation off-site is an excellent way to involve those younger than 16 in this ministry. If you have questions about dinner, please contact Kristen Machado at kpmachado@ourladyofsalem.org or 310-913-9911.
