Nurture in Nature

There’s nothing better than a breath of fresh air and sunshine on your skin! Getting that dose of nature and vitamin D couldn’t be more important than right now. The risk of turning into a real life couch potato is steep for everyone, so get outside and socially distance in the sun!

Whether you’re looking for ideas to get some outdoor solo time or suggestions for heading outside with the family or other companions, here are some fun suggestions to get you moving and out of the house for a little nurture in nature.

  1. Take a nature walk or hike. Explore your neighborhood or head to a nearby park or greenbelt. Find a nice grassy field and take your shoes and socks off. Walk around barefoot and breathe in the fresh air.

  2. Have a picnic. Pack a lunch and head to your local park or other favorite picnicking spot for a meal outdoors.

  3. Go fishing. Grab your fishing pole and head to the closest watering hole for some zen time (catching optional).

  4. Immerse yourself in water. If you’re not close to a swimming hole or beach, the garden sprinkler will do.

  5. Fly a kite. Take in the fresh air as you watch your dragonfly or butterfly soar.

  6. Start a garden. If you enjoyed playing in the dirt as a kid, give gardening a try! It’s the perfect time to prepare garden beds for Fall or to start a container garden on your balcony.

  7. Go camping. Make an overnight reservation at a state park or pitch a tent in the backyard – grab your flashlights and sleeping bags and cue the ghost stories.

  8. Go kayaking. If you don’t have your own kayak, check with local rental places to make sure they’re open and to find out what procedures are in place for keeping customers safe.

  9. Explore a new bike route. Take your time so you can appreciate the nature you’re riding through.

  10. Skating or rollerblading. Dust off those skates and get rolling!

  11. Make nature sculptures. Go hunting for sticks, twigs, leaves, cones, and rocks in your neighborhood. Stick them into a playdough base or tie them together with strings or rubber bands to make a unique masterpiece.

  12. Have sporty fun. Play catch or kick a ball with your kids or roommates, shoot hoops in your driveway or at the local park, or get creative and make up your own game. All you really need is a ball, frisbee or tossing ring of some sort, a friend or two and a great imagination!

Pro Tip: If you plan to visit a city, county or state park, be sure to look up your municipality’s latest COVID-19 rules and closures before you go. Some parks now require reservations even for day visits.

With the change in season ahead and COVID-19 affecting all plans for the foreseeable future, there’s never been a better time to get outside!
