10 Creative Ways People are Moving Activities Outdoors

Human resilience is amazing – people are quickly adapting as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rock our world. Mask wearing and heightened awareness of cleanliness have been drilled into everyone’s heads by now. With many indoor activities posing a potential health risk for the foreseeable future, another trending strategy is finding creative ways to transition (typically indoor) activities to the outdoors.

To give you a little inspiration for creating your own ways to move forward “business as unusual”, here are some smart ways schools, businesses, and organizations are heading outdoors to keep things chugging along.

  • Schools and learning centers are having socially-distanced classes on playgrounds, in parking lots, on (closed) public streets, public parks and sports fields. Pop-up tents create shelter from the elements while bringing fresh air to all and more room to spread out.

  • Churches and temples are offering drive-in worship services, prayer services in grassy fields and community meals, distanced with pre-set up tables for each family.

  • Small town and city municipalities are moving council meetings outside to parking lots, separating chairs so community members can distance safely.

  • With many restaurants still closed for indoor dining, they are claiming sidewalks and patios and getting creative with their outdoor seating setups to allow for safe social distancing while eating.

  • Salons and spas are setting up outdoor service stations to provide haircuts, massages, manicures and more  - all masked, with extra circulation.

  • Larger business meetings are being held in parking lots and one-on-one meetings are moving to masked, walking meetings.

  • Entertainment venues are hosting drive-in concerts and movies. For some areas lucky enough to be close to rivers and lakes, boat-in movies and concerts have been the hit of the summer.

  • Nursing homes are installing plexiglass cubicles in their garden areas so family members can visit their loved ones with the extra confidence of a physical barrier paired with fresh air.

  • Family and friend groups are figuring out ways to get in some much needed fun and social time – outdoor gatherings (with safeguards) are key since distance is necessary.

  • Individuals are also finding ways to move more routine activities outdoors to boost their personal mental spirits – take reading time to the treehouse or nearby park, eat your breakfast on the patio, bathe the dog outside with the water hose, you get the idea.

With Covid-19 changing routines indefinitely, it's time to get innovative – with a little determination, some extra prep and the spirit of “we’re all in this together”, there’s nothing you can’t do!
